Sound and Fury, Signifying Nothing

People are describing pictures like this and these as “powerful,” which I can only take as a synonym for “containing lots of people.” Because as much we like to delude ourselves that “change” or “progress” comes from chanting in the streets, it really comes at the ballot box. Of all the NATO protestors in Chicago this weekend, how many a) will not vote in November, b) will vote for Democrats, or c) will vote for Republicans? Would you wager that combined, that would describe 90 percent of the people there? Whatever it is, the sum total of groups “a,” “b” and “c” is the number of people who want really badly to look like they are changing the status quo, but then will either passively or actively enable it to keep going. So good job getting on TV, I guess.
