#ILCOACHSEARCH: Day 16

Hot

Brad Stevens: WHOA. Yesterday afternoon was something. Here’s a play-by-play from A Lion Eye if you need to catch up. And then today….nothing. Maybe there’s silence because Stevens’ “I have not been contacted” effectively slammed the door. Maybe it’s because someone put a lid on things yesterday. After all, Tim Beckman denied contact from Illinois, too. And it’s not necessarily dishonest – these coaching searches don’t involve the actual coach until the very end; up until that point it’s agents, search firms, and other go-betweens. What he did not say there was “I’m not going to be coaching anywhere but Butler next year,” something both Shaka Smart and Gregg Marshall (see below) saw fit to do at their respective schools.

Reggie Theus apparently has a contingent of well-connected people (including Lou Henson) pushing for the job. Sorry guys, that doesn’t make it any better of an idea, this weird love letter from Bill Liesse notwithstanding. Here’s all you need to know: UCF, DePaul, Auburn, Fresno St., Nebraska and UNLV (twice!) – those are schools that have told Reggie Theus “thanks, but no thanks.” You think any of those programs could have used the alleged immediate influx of CPL talent that we’re being told Theus brings to the table? He went to UNLV, for crying out loud, and they wanted no part of him.

Warm

Buzz Williams is going to be on the receiving end of a moneybomb from SMU. Seems unlikely, but he is from Texas, and if Tim Riggins taught me anything, it’s that Texas is forever.
